Poetry is one of the most beautiful literary works of art that man has ever created. Apart from its rhyme and rhythm, it also has figurative languages and idioms. It also portrays sensory images that the writer tries to reveal through his wonderful and colorful words. Due to these characteristics, poetry not only entertains, but also provokes critical and creative thinking among readers.

To better appreciate poetry you have to know what poetry is. Poetry is defined by various authors. One of the most notable definitions of poetry is Aristotle’s definition that poetry is an imitation of the arts. To explain it in more detail, Aristotle explained that there are three different forms of imitation which are the medium, the object, and the form of imitation. There are various means of imitation, such as voice, color, rhythmic movement, etc. Another way to imitate is through a specific object. In Aristotle’s point of view, the object of imitation is man in action, and man is either of the inferior type or of the superior type. In this context, Aristotle refers to the characters of tragedy and comedy in which in tragedy man is portrayed as good, while in comedy man is portrayed as bad. The last one is how to imitate. For Aristotle this is narrating by means of which the narrator takes the second person in whom he acts in the shoes of others. Other than that, you can also take the first person you don’t change yourself into. Finally, the narrator can also present his actors living to the audience. Another well-known poet is William Wordsworth, who “poetry is the finest breath and spirit of all knowledge; it is the passionate expression that is on the face of all science.” This only means that poetry manifests knowledge and that reading poetry is worthwhile.

On the other hand, poets are highly admired due to their powerful minds that can perceive things in various ways. For example, they perceive the tree as a human being who prays to its creator with the leaves up as arms. In this example, it is very evident that the poets go beyond what an ordinary mind can achieve. That is why they are sometimes referred to as the minds of the gods.

Another thing that makes them admirable is their choice of words and that made poetry different from prose. In poetry, the poet must choose the right words so that he can portray the sensory images that he wants his readers to hear, see, touch, feel and taste. Other than that, poets must be smart enough in the use of figurative languages to convey their intellectual ideas. You can also make use of allusions to convey historical images.

In fact, there is a discussion about whether a writer or a poet is born or made. For many people, they would argue that writers are born because of their unique ability to weave their words. Unlike other people, they can touch one’s life and cause one to think through their powerful words.

In the other point of view, some would say that the writers are done. For the reason that in their early childhood, they are not that good at writing and are not even interested in writing. But as they get older, they are motivated to write for a few reasons. At first, they are not as effective, but as the years go by, they gradually become more comfortable writing and more effective than others.

From all these points of view, it can be concluded that, whether or not writers are born, the role of education is to bring to light those unique potentials within and among our people.
