People love to eat. That statement alone carries an interesting and amusing truth. People also love their sweets. A delicious ice cream cake, three scoops of your favorite ice cream, a delicious chocolate fondue and the list is piling up. The question is, “How can you naturally cure your GERD or acid reflux and enjoy dessert at the same time, especially when most sweets, by their very nature, are poorly combined and even acid-forming?”

It helps to be well informed.

Almost everyone, including me, enjoys a dessert from time to time (or probably very often?) The unfortunate thing is that you can not control your cravings for sweets and continue consuming them like there is no tomorrow. Much more, if you suffer from digestive disorders such as GERD, acid reflux and gastritis. There are three easy ways you can eat your dessert without having any stomach problems. However, the key to remember here is that you can only enjoy again once you have entered a more alkaline state. The reason for this is that your body may be more equipped by that time to handle it.

Once you have passed that phase:

1. Get in the habit of choosing your dessert to match your meal properly. — Whether you had a side of steak and vegetable salad, or rice and vegetables with a sweet potato, remember that your selection of sweets should match what you just ate. There is another article of mine that focuses on proper food combining and discusses the different types of foods, along with foods that can go together.

2. Wait as long as you can (at least 3 hours) after a well-mixed meal before having your dessert. — We both know it’s not easy to do, especially when the scent of your favorite candy hits your nose! You may want to store your dessert a bit longer inside your fridge or freezer if this is the case. Even though you had a good mix of meals, you still need to make sure your digestion doesn’t get messed up by taking enough time between meals. This is also good in case you don’t know if the dessert you are eating is acid forming.

3. Your next two meals should be at least 50% high-water content foods to help cleanse your digestive system. — This means keeping track of what you ate for dessert (especially how much) and making sure your next two meal choices contain fresh fruits and vegetables. Something necessary, if you want to maintain good digestion in your body.
