yacht rental in South of France

A yacht for rentals will often have a range of medical facilities onboard including a defibrillator, first aid kit, oxygen tanks and specialist medications. Some larger yachts even have a Doctor on board to assist with more complex issues.

Having the right medical equipment onboard is vital for guests with any health conditions as they can be far away from land in open waters when travelling. As a result, medical evacuation insurance is an essential cover to consider when booking your luxury yacht charter. Many private yachts will also have trained crew members who can provide beauty treatments such as massages to guests, often in a dedicated room or on the sundeck surrounded by fabulous views for pure escapism. Some will also have a full salon onboard.

When it comes to the medical facilities available on a yacht rental in South of France, experts agree that most captains and crew take emergencies seriously; and most yachts are well-equipped, if perhaps a little dated. The emphasis is, however, on getting ill or injured people to shore in the shortest time possible.

As a result, the industry is seeing more owners taking medical considerations into account when planning their vessels. “At the moment we’re working with several new build projects that are incorporating medical facilities,” says Louise Cailbourdin, crewing manager at The Crew Network in Antibes. “It’s important to consider these things, particularly with the pandemic.”

One area where there has been a notable shift in the focus is on testing and diagnostics. According to Spike Briggs, managing director of MSOS, a company that provides medical kits and telemedical support services to yachts, it is likely that “point-of-care testing will become more commonplace.”

This isn’t just about avoiding the bugs that can cause stomach upsets; as anyone who has spent time on a boat will know, seasickness, hayfever and general viruses are all very common. The good news is that many of the tests used in hospitals are now available to yachts and will be able to identify most common illnesses.

X-Ray, MRI and CAT scans are all available to yacht charter through MedAire and Wilsonhalligan Yacht Recruitment, and these types of equipment can be crucial in diagnosing a range of issues from fractured bones to heart problems and lung disease. A CAT scan will combine X-Rays with a computer to create a 3D cross-section of an internal organ, and can be used to look at lungs, hearts and blood vessels.

A X-Ray can be used to detect a range of issues from osteoporosis to lung cancer. Other more invasive tests that can be carried out on a yacht for rentals include a PET scan which uses radioactive drugs to show how your organs and tissues are working, and an echocardiogram which examines the heart using sound waves.
