Ever since Daimler and Maybach introduced the first primitively designed Reitwagen model in 1885, motorcycles have been all the rage among youth and adventure seekers. Generally viewed as powerful and fuel-efficient vehicles, they dominate the Asian and US markets, among others. There are a number of different models of motorcycles, made by different companies. They vary in structural designs, technical aspects, size, color, etc. The sportbike requires a marked forward lean on the part of the rider. The standard road version allows for a straight stance with a slight lean, depending on the rider’s height. Cruiser versions are ergonomically suitable vehicles with low seats and taller handles. The time and complexity involved in drawing a motorcycle depends on the model chosen. The following steps will guide you on how to draw a motorcycle:

• Reference: Select the type between sport, standard and cruiser bikes. Choose your brand and then the model. The preferable colors for bicycles are usually black or steel gray. However, a wide variety of shades are available today. Lastly, choose a suitable image or a real vehicle as a model to draw on. The entire process requires extensive research that is done through the Internet, books, magazines, product catalogues, newspapers, etc.

• Geometric Frame – Whether your model is symmetrical or asymmetrical, you’ll need precision drawing tools to build your bike. Draw a straight line, at a slight angle to the horizontal, across the main body. Draw two tangential circles at both ends of the line. The size of the two circles will vary if the front and rear wheels are of different sizes. Usually the rear wheel is smaller in such cases. To help correctly position and measure the wheels, you can use another straight line that is tangential to the circles diametrically. Draw a large triangle with two angles inside the circles and the third at the top of the handle. This will effectively cover most of the body of the bike. The length of the sides of the triangle will depend on the shape of the main body.

• Details: Start with an elongated, egg-shaped fuel tank, followed by a curved seat. Now, define the front and rear fenders, handlebars, muffler system, tires, exhaust pipes, muffler, headlights, rear view mirrors, etc. It’s a good idea to have a large, clear reference image, as it helps to include all the relevant details in the drawing.

• Shading – Some minor shading effects may be required which can be created with a standard drawing pencil or appropriate colors. A complete pencil sketch of the vehicle is a complicated looking design. Therefore, the colors are a good choice even for a two-chrome model (black and steel).
