Whenever you try to shower with a dressing, it is quite a challenge. You already know that later it will be necessary to replace it with a clean and dry one. How is it supposed to stay clean if the doctor has told you to keep the bandage dry? Avoid annoying soggy surgical dressings and consider using a few of these methods to keep your dressings dry when you are in the shower.

1. Consider putting on a plastic bag. Putting your bandage or cast in a plastic bag can help keep it from getting wet. Make sure there are no holes in the plastic, then insert your arm or leg through the opening. Use strong tape like masking tape to secure the top and prevent leakage. If you need to keep a bandaged hand dry in the shower, protect it with a rubber glove secured with waterproof tape to prevent leakage.

2. Try plastic wrap. If dressing means a bag is not working, try plastic wrap. You should ask a friend to help you wrap your bandage in plastic wrap and tape the edges. You need to make sure to wrap a place larger than the bandage.

3. A condom is an imaginative form of protection! When you need to put a dressing on your finger or toe, put a condom over the bandage and use waterproof tape to seal the ends. (However, make sure your rubber is not lubricated!)

4. Buy a suitable cover for the dressing. A shower bandage cover is a good investment if you expect to wear large ones for an extended period of time. If you are looking for an inexpensive way to keep your bandage completely dry in the shower, you can use the ‘Shower Cover’, which works well and costs less than ten dollars. The packages include everything you need to keep the lesion dry while it improves.

5. Think of a sponge bath. If you really think it’s too difficult to keep your bandages dry while showering, maybe you should consider trying another method of cleaning yourself. If the position of the bandage allows, you can sit in your bathtub without inserting the injured part of your body. Similarly, possibly all you need to do is pull one leg out of the shower stall while you quickly wash the rest of you. Then all you have to do is wipe your leg with a cloth. Although somewhat uncomfortable, it will allow you to keep the dressing dry while cleaning.
