Lionel Trains were quick to pick up on the buzz created by Robert Zemeckis’ 2004 animated film release with the launch of their own O-gauge Polar Express electric train. Shortly after, they released a cheaper G-gauge version of the polar express train. . The two versions of the same product have caused some confusion, especially among parents who are not especially experts in trains. So what is the difference?

The track set O is an electric train set, with the locomotive made of die-cast metal parts, running on a standard Lionel track, also made of metal. The G-gauge assembly, on the other hand, is made of plastic: locomotive, wagons, and track. The locomotive runs on batteries and these two factors, more than anything else, explain the price difference.

I want to give my kids a great Christmas, which one should I buy?

Both sets represent important entry points to a very satisfying hobby for a lifetime. Both games will give your children an unforgettable Christmas and provide a focal point for you to interact with your children’s game. For my two cents, the train sets are worth every dollar you spend and will continue to provide fun and joy well beyond the holiday season.

The G Gauge set, which retails for around $ 100.00, is more suitable for younger children; 3 to 6 years. Everything you need on December 25th is in the box – batteries are included (size 6 C for the locomotive and 2 AA for the RC controller). You can also purchase a 9.6v rechargeable separately to replace the Cs. The locomotive makes surprisingly good steam train sounds including bell and whistle, the car has doors that open, and the observation car features a vanishing tramp, which is sure to be a hit with the kids! The easy-to-mount track forms a 72 “by 55” oval. Lionel dealers offer additional track packages, making this set of trains a true entry point to a model railroad. All set, a great introduction to a great hobby.

Okay, I’m convinced … but tell me about the O-gauge train.

Lionel’s O gauge Polar Express costs a little more (between $ 266.00 and $ 329.00 depending on where you buy) but you get a lot more. This is a genuine electric train kit that will work with any of the other Gauge O products in the Lionel range.

Suitable for what ages? Well, you know your own kids, but 7 or more seems right to me.

The locomotive, a pretty decent representation of the Lima-built Berkshire 2-8-4, exhales smoke as it runs, puffs like a real steam locomotive, and has a very realistic sounding steam hiss. All three passenger cars have interior lighting (a nice touch for when night falls on December 25 and the salon lights go out) and the passengers themselves are silhouetted in the car windows. Rail easily assembles into a 60 “x 40” oval. The control pack (which also has bell and whistle buttons) is big and solid and the throttle itself is satisfyingly thick and mounted on the right side of the pack.

There you go Different horses for different routes, from a great American model train manufacturer. G or O? Have fun deciding. Why not go to your local train shop or online hobby store and try them out for yourself. Large oaks grow from small acorns.
