A common question prospective soldiers ask is “What should I take with me to basic training?” It’s an issue that worries those who embark for basic training and fear getting into trouble for bringing contraband to the base. To alleviate your doubts and frustrations, I will explain what items you can take with you to the training camp.

Clothes

If you’ve read the official packing list on goarmy.com, you’ll see that they require you to bring an extra set of clothing. To be honest, new uniforms will be given to you upon arrival at the front desk on the first day and you will wear them until graduation day. However, it is recommended that you wear the clothes you are wearing and a comfortable pair of tennis shoes.

documents

All you need are the original certified documents that you have given to your recruiter. Those documents would be your birth certificate, social security card, certificates, identification card, marriage license, divorce decree, spouse and child documents and also have your direct deposit form. You or your recruiter will prepare your personal information in a manila folder for you to deliver to the receiving battalion at BCT.

Technology

You are welcome to bring your electronic devices to the boot camp, such as an iPod, iPad, laptop, mp3 player and digital camera, but expect those items to be locked away. Only your cell phone is the authorized item to have and will be returned to you from time to time by your drill sergeants when you earn privileges.

Miscellaneous

  • Small backpack that has neutral colors.
  • An inexpensive black wristwatch.
  • A phone card to make calls using the phone booth. Only if you decide not to bring your cell phone.
  • Adress book.
  • Stationery material such as a notebook, pen, envelopes and also postage stamps.

Personal hygiene

If you think you may easily get dirty or smell bad during your trip. It is recommended that you bring a miniature hygiene kit that is acceptable under airline policies. You will find that you would have the most basic items such as a deodorant, a toothbrush, toothpaste, a comb, a razor, and also shaving cream.

Money

Nothing is free in basic training except food, uniforms, laundry, and also housing. Otherwise you have to pay for hygiene items and also haircuts which are $7 dollars. To access your funds, you will need to bring your debit card to withdraw money from your account. They have ATMs located near the Post Exchange (PX) store so you can withdraw twenty bills.
