White hunters in America saw leather bags as an advantage for carrying a combination of bear fat or buffalo fat, minced buffalo meat, berries, and nuts (this was typical for their day). Eventually, the hunters combined the spices from the Mexicans, the pemmican from the Native Americans, and their own meats to make what is now known as chili.
